Common Searching Problems:

Are you getting no results or not as many hits as you would expect when you are sure there should be cases on point? Are you getting too many hits? Check or try the following:

Searching Ontario Trial Cases (O.T.C.) and British Columbia Trial Cases (BCTC):

In 2007 MLB stopped adding key number references to cases from the Ontario Superior Court and the British Columbia Supreme Court due to the volume of decisions from those courts. Therefore, to find cases from these two courts, users of the National Reporter System or Raw Law should search by key word(s) instead of MLB's key numbers.

Caveat: Note that the above search strings are suggestions only and there may be numerous other ways to achieve similar results. It is possible that any search can yield some stray or irrelevant hits because of the way the words fall in any given document. If you look closely at the headnotes you can see that there are certain standard words which appear in all headnotes around which searches may be crafted. For example, the letters MLB (standing for Maritime Law Book Ltd.) appear at the top of each document and serve as a useful designator or point of reference for searching information at the top of a case or headnote. Similarly the words Summary, Counsel, and [End Headnote] appear in all headnoted cases.
