Bound Volumes with DisketteCommencing in 1994 all our bound volumes include a diskette that contains the full text of the cases reported in the volumes. The material on our diskettes is in ASCII form and is readable by any MS-DOS or Windows word processor. Due to the development of our Internet site this service was discontinued in 1998. C Top | BottomCases Reported Index - In PrintEach part, volume and digest includes an Index to Cases Reported and an Index to Unreported Cases. In addition, we publish a cumulative loose leaf service for all the cases in a series. This loose leaf service is titled "Index to Cases Reported" and is updated every six months; and includes an Index to Unedited/Unreported Cases. Claims - BooksClaims for defective volumes should be made by calling us free on 1-800-561-0220 (from anywhere in Canada or the U.S.A. - except Alaska and Hawaii). MLB does not honour claims one year from date of publication for missing or lost volumes. Copyright limitationsMLB claims copyright in headnotes and indexes. We do not claim copyright in judicial decisions.Copies may be made for persons working on the subscriber's premises. Copying by subscribers for persons who work outside the subscriber's premises is prohibited. Copying for profit or commercial purposes is prohibited. The digital material on our disks may be networked with computers on the subscriber's premises but an MLB license is required if the digital material is networked with a computer off the subscriber's premises. Corrections - BooksCommencing in 1994 a "List of Corrections" is inserted in each volume under the "Table of Contents". The list includes corrections for the volume plus corrections for prior volumes (for corrections received after the volume was mailed). D Top | BottomDigests and Digest Service - In PrintOur digests consolidate the indexes from 10 volumes and also include a detailed list of our key numbers for the over 150 titles in our topical index. The main advantage for a searcher using a digest is that it saves consulting 10 individual volumes. Commencing in 1995 each digest volume contains a computer diskette that contains the material in the bound volume. A digest can also be used to browse the headings and sub- headings and key numbers to find a particular point of law. Our Master Key Word Index provides cross-references to find headings, sub-headings and points of law. Subscribers to the advance parts and bound volumes are automatically sent the digests as published. We offer a Digest Service for lawyers who do not want to purchase individual volumes of a series. A subscriber to the Digest Service for any of the reporters receives a digest every 12 to 15 months.
Easy Search Digests on CDROMNOTE: This service was discontinued in February 2006. Maritime Law Book offers an easy search CDROM service for each of our reporters. Indexing - BooksEach volume in every reporter contains the following indexes:
The above indexes are consolidated in our digests. A digest covers 10 volumes of a report series (see Digests above). InternetOur Web server includes all the cases from all our reporters (excluding the APRs and the WACs); plus our Key Number Breakdown. Subscribers to our paper volumes and subscribers to our full text CDROM service are issued a password giving them free access to the same material on the Internet. Such access will enable our subscribers to update a search during the delay for printing and the delay in CDROM quarterly updates. Searchers who want to search and pay $4.00 per case are not charged for searching, that is, there is no charge for viewing a hit list. It is only when the text of a case is viewed or looked at that a charge is incurred.
- $4.00 per case, search databases free.
Invoices, Prices, Financing and Shipping - BooksSubscribers are invoiced on the shipment of the first advance part of a volume. Prices are in Canadian dollars. U.S. dollar prices are available on request. Invoices to foreign customers are stated in both Canadian dollars and the U.S. dollar equivalent. In 1995 MLB started charging for shipping and handling mainly due to dramatic increases in postal rates. Overseas customers are sent bound volumes by air parcel (this charge is included in our prices for overseas subscriptions). Books may be ordered on approval. We will also enter trial subscriptions with no invoicing for three months. Interest free financing is available on set purchases. We require a minimum payment of $150 per month in the form of post dated cheques. We will also lease our books with a favourable option to purchase. Ask our sales representative. The shipping and handling charges on set purchases is $1 per volume within Canada or $1.50 per volume for shipments to the U.S.A. for shipments of 35 volumes or more. The charges for less than 35 volumes are as follows:
Key Number SystemThe Key Number System is used in all our reporters. The essence of the system is that our editors classify and assign the same key number to a point of law every time that point arises in a decision. For example, every case that deals with the legal doctrine of entrapment is assigned the key number "Criminal Law - Topic 205". And that key number "Criminal Law - Topic 205" can be used to search for entrapment cases in all our reporters - either manually or by computer. Each title such as Criminal Law has its own set of numbers, starting with the number one. Our Key Number Breakdown includes over 150 titles, beginning with Actions and ending with Workers' Compensation. We have assigned over 30,000 key numbers and we create over 1,000 new numbers each year. See MLB Breakdown database on internet website or cdrom. L Top | BottomLanguage of ReportsBoth French and English are the official languages of the governments of Canada and New Brunswick. The decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada are published in the National Reporter in both languages but the headnotes and indexing are in English. Some of the decisions of the Federal Court of Appeal are received in both languages and for those cases we publish both languages but the headnotes and indexes are in English. The Federal Trial Reports includes decisions of the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division. Some of the decisions are received and published in both languages but the headnotes and indexing are in English. The decisions, headnotes and indexing in the New Brunswick Reports (2d) have been completely bilingual since 1988. Infrequently we receive a decision in French from a province other than New Brunswick. It is our policy to publish such a decision without a translation but the headnote and indexing are in English. M Top | BottomMaster Key Word Index - In PrintThe Master Key Word Index is a loose leaf service. It is an aid to searchers looking for a key number. The index provides cross-references to the headings, sub-headings and topics in our over 150 titles. For example, if the searcher is looking for the title and key number for cases on the doctrine of entrapment, he can look under the entry "entrapment" and will be referred to "Criminal Law 205". This key number can then be used to search manually or by computer. Supplements are prepared and mailed annually to subscribers. To find a point we also suggest a perusal of the complete key number breakdown in a digest or online at "Key Number Search" N Top | BottomNRS - National Reporter SystemThe National Reporter System consists of reporters for every province (except Quebec) plus two reporters for the federal courts. The provincial reporters include comprehensive coverage of the courts of appeal. The provincial reporters also include selected cases from the superior trial courts. The National Reporter includes all the cases from the Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal plus judgments from the House of Lords and the Privy Council that are relevant to Canadian law. The Federal Trial Reports includes selected cases from the Federal Court of Canada, Trial Division. Starting January 1, 1997 all our electronic databases include unedited cases (cases without a headnote). These unedited cases would ordinarily be unreported. The National Reporter System is the only reporting system in Canada that provides comprehensive coverage of every provincial final appellate court (except Quebec) plus the final federal appellate courts. A feature of the National Reporter System is the ability to search all the reporters by using Maritime Law Book's unique Key Number System. NRS Current Caselaw on disketteNOTE: This service was discontinued in January 2005. Commenced October 1, 1994. A monthly diskette service that includes the topics (summaries of points of law) from all current cases in the National Reporter System. Each disk includes the topics from over 500 recent cases from the NRS. W Top | BottomWords and Phrases - In PrintThis loose leaf service contains over 5,000 entries from over 165,000 cases published by our firm since 1969. A sample entry is as follows: Hearing - The Federal Court of Appeal distinguished between a "hearing" and "proceedings" as used in the Immigration Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. I-2 - See paragraphs 6 and 7 - Salinas v. Minister of Employment and Immigration, 142 N.R. 211. Supplements are prepared and mailed annually to subscribers.
